About Us: The Well Hotel & Taproom story

Bloom Block Trinidad Colorado

From Our Hearts to Yours

We’re Keely Williams and Jason Decker, the husband‑and‑wife team behind The Well Hotel & Taproom in Trinidad, Colorado. We love this town and want to share how our crazy journey brought us to 155 E Main Street.

In 2021 we held our wedding here in Trinidad while the building had only been under construction for about three months. Many of our guests asked us for downtown accommodations but there were none. That experience showed us just how much Trinidad needed a downtown hotel and reassured us that we’d made the right decision to undertake this project. On our wedding party we noticed the lack of accommodations & hotels in downtown Trinidad which is exactly why we opened “The Well Hotel & Taproom”.

Relevance to The Well

Keely Williams

Architect, historic preservationist and real‑estate developer. In New Orleans she and her partner restored two 19th‑century townhouses into the Catahoula Hotel, a 35‑room boutique property meant to feel like “a bar with rooms upstairsnola.curb

Keely’s experience designing the Catahoula Hotel taught her how to blend historic buildings with modern hospitality. She applies that knowledge to preserve the 1888 character of our Main Street building while creating comfortable, art‑filled rooms and lively common spaces.

Jason Decker

Digital‑marketing entrepreneur and founder of Vivid Web Marketing. Jason has advised businesses on digital advertising, Search Engine Optimization & Web Development & more for nearly 20 years. Jason is passionate about craft beer & technology, his influences are seen all over The Well (self pour tap system). You might even catch Jason DJing in the taproom.

Jason’s marketing know‑how helps us tell our story, connect with guests online and operate efficiently. He also leads our self‑pour taproom concept, hospitality programming and community events.

Together we complement each other: Keely brings design, architecture, development and preservation expertise; Jason brings digital marketing, music and customer‑experience insights. We’re both dog lovers & are passionate about traveling.

The History of Our Building: The Bloom Block

155 E Main Street isn’t just an address, it’s part of Trinidad’s story. The brick structure known as The Bloom Block (now The Well Hotel & Taproom) is a contributing property in the Corazón de Trinidad historic district, which was established and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The Well is now a historic building built in 1888 with original character restored and modern hotel amenities.

Throughout its life the building hosted many ventures: it began as a hotel in the late 19th century, later housed a grocery store, a music store, a sign shop and most recently operated as Teri’s Hallmark & Floral, a gift and flower shop. The flower cooler now holds craft beers & cocktails for our self-pour system. The Hallmark shop was still going strong when we purchased the property; we feel grateful that owners The Teri’s trusted us to continue the building’s legacy when they sold it.

Our Five‑Year Journey

2020: Dreaming and Planning

After noticing the gap in downtown lodging in Trinidad, we began exploring options. Keely’s work restoring the Catahoula Hotel showed us how hospitality can bring life back to a historic building. Jason’s marketing background gave us confidence that our project could succeed if we told the story well. We spent countless evenings walking along Main Street, imagining how a boutique hotel and community space could energize Trinidad.

2021–2022: Securing the Site and Visioning

We created a plan to restore the 1888 Victorian architecture while adding modern comforts. Our concept combined a self‑pour taproom, restaurant and event space on the ground floor with 12 uniquely designed guest rooms upstairs. Inspired by Keely’s “bar with rooms upstairs” philosophy we wanted guests to feel like they were staying with friends & able to pour their own drinks and wander up to bed in a friendly & casual environment, the opposite of most hotels.

2022–2024: Renovation and Soft Opening of The Well Taproom Kitchen

Restoring a 19th‑century building requires patience. We preserved brick walls and tin ceilings, upgraded plumbing, hvac and electrical systems as well as installed modern bathrooms, keyless entry and Marshall‑amp mini fridges in each room. Meanwhile, we opened the self‑pour taproom and kitchen, hosting karaoke nights, open‑mic sessions, tons of bands, DJ’s and community events, weddings & more.

2024–2025: Welcoming Guests

Even before the entire hotel opened, travelers began booking our limited rooms & have been sold out most of the time since then. By late 2025 we had operated for nearly a year with a limited number of rooms and were thrilled to earn a 4.8/5‑star rating with over 150 five‑star reviews and to win “Best Hotel/Lodging in Trinidad” from The Trinidad Chronicle. These rave reviews mean the world to us because they come from visitors who share our love for Trinidad & our efforts for The Hotel.

The Final Touches

As we complete the last phase of construction, we’re finishing the remaining guest rooms and installing an elevator to make the entire building accessible. We’ve already opened most of the hotel, and the elevator will arrive soon, an important feature in our 1888 building that will ensure every guest can enjoy the upstairs spaces.

Restoring the 1888 Front Facade

One of the most exciting parts of our project has been uncovering the original 1888 street‑facing facade. Over the decades, various tenants covered or altered the front of the building. As part of our restoration we’re bringing back the tall Victorian windows and custom wood doors that graced the building when it was first constructed.

We’ve already completed one of the main door entries and several of the new windows, allowing natural light to pour into the taproom and restoring the rhythm of the original storefront. The second half of the facade & additional windows and another custom door built to match historic photographs will be finished by January 2026. When everything is complete, Main Street will once again showcase the building’s elegant 19th‑century front while providing modern comfort and accessibility.

Why We Built The Well Hotel

We created The Well to celebrate Trinidad’s creativity and resilience & offer visitors a chance to see & stay in the best of Trinidad right in the heart of Main St. As a locally owned business, we believe in reinvesting in our community, hiring local artisans and suppliers and providing a gathering space where everyone feels welcome. Bringing this 1888 building back to life has been incredibly challenging & stressful as well as joyful & rewarding. We hope you’ll come experience it for yourself and share in the next chapter of its long story.
